Drone Operations

OSRT utilizes drones equipped with high definition and thermal imaging cameras. Our drone pilots are FAA certified and undergo the same extensive search training as the rest of our team members. This makes them familiar with search and rescue specific drone considerations and search techniques. Our command trailers contain large screen monitors which can be used to more clearly observe drone footage in real time, allowing OSRT to vector search units directly to a specific location.

Multiple studies have highlighted the benefits of using drones in search and rescue operations, including the following:

Increased Coverage

Drones can cover up to 10 times more area than ground teams in the same amount of time. For instance, a study indicated that a drone could search an area of about 1 square mile in approximately 15 minutes, compared to several hours for ground teams.

Detection Rates

In specific case studies, drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras have been reported to locate missing persons at rates significantly higher than traditional methods. For example, one study showed drones increased detection rates by over 50% in search scenarios.

Speed of Response

Drones can be deployed rapidly, often within minutes of an incident being reported. This quick deployment can be crucial in time-sensitive situations, such as locating missing persons.

Safety and access

Drones are able to quickly and safely access areas that may be hazardous or inaccessible to ground searchers.

Thermal imaging shows how useful drones can be in many search scenarios and their powerful ability to identify missing individuals located in an area.
